Sullivan Middle School is located in Rock Hill, SC. We are directly next to Cherry Park, one of Rock Hill’s sports and recreation areas. We are proud of our Professional Development School Partnership with Winthrop University, which allows us to share resources, strategies and knowledge with pre-service teachers and Winthrop faculty.

Sullivan, the home of the Falcons, is an authorized Middle Years International Baccalaureate School, with approximately 800 students in grades 6-8.

As a Middle Years IB Programme School, we seek to exemplify the Learner Profile Qualities found in all International Baccalaureate Schools.

Here are some of the ways:

We are Caring – our school participates in many service activities, from our yearly canned food drives to our ConKerr Cancer pillowcase projects. Our students write letters to troops, act as school ambassadors, and create art to be shared with the community. Money collected by FNN (Falcon News Network, our student-run news broadcast) for birthday shout-outs, is donated to Heifer International. All eighth grade students will complete a 15-hour Community Project in which they investigate a need in a community, develop a plan to address that need, act on their plan and then reflect on the process and service.

We are knowledgeable - our students work to learn and apply their knowledge in core and elective classes, as well as in Academy classes such as Astronomy, National History Day and Media Literacy.

We are Inquirers – our students and teachers are embracing challenge-based learning. We know using our knowledge to address real world problems is the goal of learning.

We are Open-Minded - we welcome students with diverse backgrounds, interests and skills. All Falcons are IB students! We are a South Carolina Red Carpet School, which we earned with our open door, friendly policies.

We are Reflective – students and faculty members are invited to regularly reflect on their strengths and limitations. We know we learn best when we are aware of our learning styles. Twelve of our teachers have earned National Board for Professional Teaching certifications, demonstrating their commitment to being highly reflective practitioners.

We are Risk-Takers – Sullivan teachers encourage students to take academic risks – to ask questions, to offer different opinions and try new roles. Students can perform in our orchestra, band or chorus, try a new language or participate in a mock trial, or a myriad of other clubs and activities. Our Falcon News Network, our morning news broadcast, is entirely student-run.

We are Balancedwe know that a great school is more than academics. All Falcons take an arts course, as well as a technology course each year. We offer a wide range of clubs such as Academic Team, Math Counts, Newspaper and Mock Trial. Our seventh and eighth grade students can try out for many sports – including ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½’ only middle school soccer and baseball teams.

We are Principled – Falcons act with integrity and honesty. Our students learn about being principled users of technology and to avoid plagiarism. Sullivan students take responsibility for themselves.

We are Communicators– all students take a second language course every year. We offer Chinese, French and Spanish. We also focus strongly on literacy, because reading, writing, speaking and listening form the background for all academic success.

We are Thinkers – we know that the new SC State Academic Standards will require us to think critically. We know we are ready for this challenge, as we have strong literacy practices – students read a self-selected text for at least 20 minutes daily in a core class.
