ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Volunteers: A Timeless Impact

photoAs National Volunteer Week unfolded last week, we took a moment to reflect on the extraordinary contributions of volunteers who dedicated their time to our students and schools.

Almost 4,000 active volunteers serve in our schools. Adding up each volunteer's hours, the estimated economic impact for the 2023-2024 school year is $400,000, according to data.

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, each with unique skills and passions. They support students in many ways, from leading small reading groups to rallying local businesses for assistance. Their diverse roles all contribute to the betterment of our school community.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at York Road Elementary is one example of the many change-makers among our volunteers.

“Our group of PTA volunteers exemplifies an all-in approach,” York Road Elementary Principal Crystal Guyton said. “Our students and families feel valued by this group that tries new things, debriefs after events, puts kids first, and moves forward."

For PTA president of York Road, Keisha Lightner, volunteerism starts back to her years spent serving the community alongside her grandmother during the summer. “Serving others is truly my love language,” she shared, reflecting on those memories.

For Keisha, it's not just about the tasks at hand—it's about the people she can uplift along the way. "Every smile, every moment of gratitude, it's all a reminder of why I do what I do," she said. "Serving others isn't just a part of my life; it's who I am."

At Ebinport Elementary, Dr. David Keely cultivates growth in the school's Sensory Garden and students' hearts.

“Dr. Keely dedicates his time to teaching classes in the garden and organizing weekend workdays, involving students and community members alike,” Dr. Rhonda Kelsey, Principal at Ebinport Elementary, said. "His example motivated our students and their teachers to take ownership of the garden."

“It’s a way to give back,” Dr. Keely said. “Especially when the schools have provided so much for my children.”

Karin Ellis and Harmony Baptist Church's compassionate members support students and staff at Oakdale Elementary. From delivering meals and snacks to supporting events like Field Day, their commitment to service left a lasting impression.

"Our partnership was not only transactional but transformational for students,” Oakdale Elementary Jacob Moree said. “From providing snacks to teachers each week to feeding eight families Thanksgiving dinners, they embody the true spirit of volunteerism.”

“It's our [Harmony Baptist Church] desire to let the teachers and students know they are loved and appreciated,” Karin Eliis said.

In addition to individuals, many organizations volunteer their time and efforts throughout our schools.

The Kappa Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi at Old Pointe Elementary inspires excellence through acts of kindness and mentorship.

“From opening car doors in the morning to implementing transformative mentoring programs, these volunteers shape future leaders,” said Principal Bianca Chivers-White. "Their commitment to our students is evident in their everyday actions."

It's important to note these individuals and organizations are just a few examples of the many teams, organizations, and dedicated individuals who selflessly give their time to volunteer throughout our schools. Their collective efforts make a difference in our school community. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all volunteers for their dedication and tireless commitment.
